Kindergarten and 1st Grade STEAM Lessons

2nd and 3rd Grade STEAM Lessons

How do I know which grade level is right for my student?
Each lesson page lists the recommended grade level prominently. As a general guide: Kindergarten and 1st Grade lessons focus on exploration and creation with simple materials. 2nd and 3rd Grade lessons introduce iterative engineering thinking. 4th and 5th Grade lessons present more complex multi-step design challenges. If you are unsure, contact us and we can recommend a specific lesson based on your student’s grade and interests.
Can a lesson designed for one grade level be used with a different grade?
Yes. Most lessons can be adapted up or down by one grade band. The teacher guide includes notes on how to increase or decrease the complexity of the challenge for different learners. A 3rd grade lesson with simplified constraints works well for an advanced 2nd grader, and the same lesson with more engineering requirements can challenge a 4th grader.
Do you have lessons for all grades K through 5?
Yes. The library includes lessons across Kindergarten through 5th Grade. Not every grade level has the same number of lessons; the library is actively growing as Deanna and Jamie create new content. New lessons are added regularly.
Are your lessons aligned with grade-level curriculum standards?
Yes. All lessons are designed with Next Generation Science Standards and grade-level curriculum expectations in mind. The facilitator guide for each lesson includes a standards alignment section. Can I use a grade-level lesson for a mixed-age group or multi-grade classroom?
Yes. Dakota STEAM Learning lessons are open-ended by design, which makes them well-suited for mixed-age or multi-grade settings. The challenge brief is the same for all students; differentiation happens naturally because open-ended challenges let each student work at their own level of complexity. The facilitator guide includes suggestions for supporting a range of learners in one session.
